Bay and bow windows deserve a warning. They carry their own structural load, need a small roof, and are supported by cables or knee braces. A poorly installed bay window sags and leaks within a few years, and correcting it costs more than the original installation. This is not the place to take the cheapest bid.

Two points that get lost in showroom conversations. Bare aluminium conducts heat roughly a thousand times better than vinyl, so in any climate with real winters it is a thermal liability regardless of the glass fitted to it — look for a thermal break at minimum. And vinyl quality varies enormously between the builder-grade product sold at volume and a welded, multi-chambered, reinforced frame. "Vinyl" on a quote tells you almost nothing; the manufacturer and product line tell you everything.
Glazing, U-factor and SHGC
Two numbers on the NFRC label do most of the work, and which one matters depends entirely on where you live.
- U-factor measures heat loss. Lower is better. Typical range is 0.15 to 0.40. This is the number that matters in a heating-dominated climate.
- Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) measures how much solar heat passes through. Lower keeps a house cooler. This is the number that matters in a cooling-dominated climate — and getting it wrong in Arizona costs you more in air conditioning than any frame upgrade will ever save.
- Visible transmittance is how much daylight comes through. Aggressive solar coatings can make rooms noticeably darker.
- Air leakage is a genuine differentiator between manufacturers and is frequently ignored. Casements seal against their frame and outperform hung windows here.
Argon gas fill between panes adds a few percent to the price and a real if modest improvement to U-factor. Triple glazing adds 20 to 30 percent and is genuinely worthwhile in cold northern climates or where noise is the actual problem. In mild or hot climates the payback typically exceeds the window's service life — that money is better spent on a correct SHGC and on installation quality.
Installation beats specification
A mid-range window installed correctly outperforms a premium window installed badly, every time. Air sealing around the frame, proper flashing integrated with the water-resistive barrier, low-expansion foam rather than fibreglass stuffing, and a shimmed, square, unbowed frame matter more than any line on the spec sheet. When comparing quotes, weigh the installer at least as heavily as the product.
Insert vs. full-frame replacement
This single choice moves the price by 20 to 30 percent and it is the most common source of confusion between two quotes that look otherwise identical.
An insert — also called a pocket or retrofit replacement — fits a new window inside the existing frame. The original jambs, exterior trim and siding are left undisturbed. It is faster, cleaner, cheaper, and it works well when the existing frame is genuinely sound. The trade-offs: you lose roughly an inch of glass on each dimension, and anything wrong behind that frame stays there, hidden.
A full-frame replacement removes the entire window down to the rough opening. The sill, flashing, insulation and framing become visible and can be corrected, and you keep the full original glass area. It costs more because it involves siding, flashing and interior and exterior trim work.
The decision rule is simple. Any evidence of water — soft wood, staining, peeling paint at the sill, visible rot — means full-frame. Installing an insert over a rotten sill hides an active problem behind a new window and guarantees a far larger bill later. Otherwise, if the frames are sound and square, an insert is the sensible choice.
When not to replace
Replacement is oversold. These problems are all cheaper to fix than to replace around:
- Draughts are usually failed weatherstripping or an unsealed gap between frame and framing — a caulk and foam job costing a fraction of a new window.
- A foggy double-pane means the seal has failed. Many units can have the insulated glass unit alone replaced for $150 to $400, keeping the existing frame and sash.
- Sashes that will not stay up are broken balances, a $30 to $80 part.
- Condensation on the inside face in winter is an indoor humidity problem, not a window fault. New windows will not fix it.
- Peeling paint on wood windows is maintenance. A well-built old wood window that has been maintained can outlast the vinyl unit sold to replace it.
The genuine reasons to replace: single-pane glass, rotten or racked frames, windows that no longer operate or lock, egress that fails code in a bedroom, or a whole-house comfort and noise problem you have decided to solve at once.
The energy savings reality check
Window salespeople lead with energy savings because it sounds like the project pays for itself. It rarely does.
Replacing genuine single-pane windows with modern double glazing commonly cuts total household energy use by 10 to 15 percent — real money, and often a sensible payback. Replacing functional double-pane windows with better double-pane windows typically saves under 5 percent, which on a $12,000 project will not pay back within the windows' service life.
That does not make replacement a bad decision. It makes energy savings a bad justification. Comfort near the glass, eliminating draughts, noise reduction, windows that actually open and lock, no more condensation, security, and appearance are all legitimate reasons — and they are the reasons homeowners are actually satisfied afterwards. If a salesperson's pitch rests on a payback calculation, ask to see the assumptions.
Comparing window quotes
Insist that every quote states:
- Manufacturer and exact product line — not "premium vinyl".
- Insert or full-frame, stated explicitly. This alone can explain a 30% gap.
- NFRC ratings: U-factor, SHGC, and air leakage for the actual configuration quoted.
- Per-window pricing, itemised by opening, not one lump sum.
- Air sealing and flashing method, and what happens to the existing weather barrier.
- Interior and exterior trim: what is reused, what is new, who paints.
- Lead-safe RRP practices if the home predates 1978 — legally required, and a firm that does not mention it is not certified.
- Haul-away and disposal.
- Both warranties: manufacturer on the product, installer on the labour, with durations stated separately and transferability noted.
- Lead time. Custom sizes commonly run six to twelve weeks.
High-pressure sales tactics
Parts of the replacement window industry run on in-home closing: a multi-hour presentation, a headline price, then a "today only" discount that evaporates if you do not sign. Any price genuinely available today is available next week. Take every quote away, compare the product lines on the NFRC database, and never sign at the kitchen table on the first visit. Note also that most states give you a statutory right to cancel a door-to-door contract within a short window — find that clause before you sign, not after.
